Childhood History

It’s safe to say that Lewandowski was meant to be a player from the day he was born. Ideally, everyone in Robert Lewandowski’s family is a sports star.

Lewandowski’s dad, Krzysztof Lewandowski, was a judo champion at the national level and a football player for the Polish club Hutnik Warszawa. His mom, Iwona Lewandowski, used to play volleyball for AZS Warszawa.

While Lewandowski experimented with a few other activities as a child, he always found the most satisfaction when he had a ball at his feet. When his father discovered his son’s interest, he started taking him to training sessions at Partyzant Leszno. Lewandowski began training at Varsovia Warsaw at the age of nine.

After seven years, Lewandowski moved on to Delta Warsaw, a fifth-division team that supplied players to Legia Warsaw. Then tragedy struck, and he was forced to retreat. Krzystof, his father, had hoped his son would one day play for the Lazienkowska Street club. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2005 and never witnessed his son’s first senior game.

Where is Lewandowski from?

Lewandowski was born in Warsaw, the capital and largest city of Poland. He grew up in Leszno, a small village in Warsaw West County, east-central Poland.

Club Career

Lewandowski got his start in football when he played for the neighborhood team, Partyzant Leszno, without being listed. In 1997, Robert joined MKS Varsovia Warsaw, where he played for seven years as a teenager. A year later, he moved to the fourth-tier team Delta Warsaw, where he finally got to play on the first team and ended the season with four goals.

He scored 15 goals in the Polish third division in 2006–07, which helped Znicz Pruszków win promotion. The following season, he had 21 goals and was the top scorer in Poland’s second-best league.

Lewandowski signed a contract with Lech Pozna on June 8, 2008, for 1.5 million PLN. He played his first game for Lech on July 17, 2008, when he came in as a replacement in the first qualifying leg of the UEFA Cup against Khazar Lankaran from Azerbaijan.

In his first season in Poland’s top league, he was second in goals scored. Lewandowski scored 18 goals in 42 games, bringing his total for the season to 18. The following season, he had 18 goals and was the leading scorer, which helped his team win the title in 2009–10.

Bundesliga Career and Records (Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich)

During his time in the Bundesliga, Robert Lewandowski played in 384 games. He won 274 of them. During his time in the Bundesliga, he scored 312 goals. He won the German Champion title in both years when he played for Borussia Dortmund in 2010/11 and 2011/12. Robert Lewandowski won the same title in 2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17, 2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20, 2020/21, and 2021/22 while playing for FC Bayern München.

International (Poland National Team)

Lewandowski began his international career in 2007 with Poland’s Under-19 team. His first game for the senior national team was on September 10, 2008, three weeks after his 20th birthday.

The Polish striker scored many hat tricks for the Polish national team. On October 5, 2017, he scored a hat trick in Poland’s 6-1 win against Armenia, giving him 50 goals for Poland and making him the country’s all-time leading scorer. The previous milestone was 48 goals, set by Wodzimierz Lubaski.

Lewandowski scored the equalizer in Poland’s 1-1 draw with Spain in their second group stage encounter at UEFA Euro 2020 on June 19, 2021, making him the first Polish player to score in three successive European Championships.

Ahead of preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Lewandowski was called to Poland’s national team. After missing a penalty in the opening game against Mexico, he finally broke through in the World Cup in the second game against Saudi Arabia.

Barcelona

On July 16, 2022, Barcelona announced they had made a deal with Bayern Munich to sign Robert Lewandowski.  He signed a four-year deal with FC Barcelona for a fee of €45 million, which could increase to €50 million with add-ons.

Lewandowski’s move to FC Barcelona made him the most expensive player in Polish history and the most expensive player that Bayern Munich has ever sold. The release clause in the deal was set at €500 million.  He wears the number 9 shirt that Memphis Depay has worn.

Style of play

Lewandowski has established and ultimately included himself in the list of the World’s most talented strikers. Many people now idolize him as one of the best center-forwards in history. He is fondly called “Lewangoalski” because he scores many goals. He is good at finishing with his head and both feet.

As a well-rounded forward, Lewandowski is said to have almost all of the traits of a classic number nine: height, strength, balance, speed, intelligent movement, and skill with both feet.

Even though he mainly plays as a goal-scorer in the penalty area because of his positional sense, strength in the air, powerful shot with either foot, ability to shoot the first time, excellent technical skills, quick feet, skill dribbling, and vision. While also possesses the physicality to win fouls for his team or hold up the ball with his back to the goal in advantageous positions, despite often playing as a lone center forward or a winger.

Life outside football

Outside of football, Lewandowski is a great philanthropist and businessman. Throughout their careers, Lewandowski and his wife, Anna, have supported, donated to, and raised money for several children’s charities and organizations. One such organization is the Children’s Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw, for which they raised over 150,000 PLN at Anna’s birthday party on August 25, 2018.

Lewandowski has contributed 100,000 PLN to help pay for medical care for Cyprian Gawe, a 3-year-old kid from Hel, and annually donates goods or private meetings to be auctioned off to benefit the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity.

The FC Barcelona striker is currently a UNICEF ambassador. He became a UNICEF goodwill ambassador in March 2014.

During the March 2020 COVID-19 epidemic, Lewandowski and his wife Anna donated €1 million.

Lewandowski is a shareholder in Protos Venture Capital, which he uses to invest in businesses, including startups, e-commerce, and websites. He also runs the marketing communications firm Stor9_, which he founded.
